Typical symptoms are a severe toothache, swollen gums or face, pus or a bad taste in the mouth, and fever or a general feeling of illness. An abscess is a bacterial infection at or around the tooth, so the signs often combine local pain with the sense of being unwell. Any of these warrants prompt dental evaluation.

An untreated abscess can spread infection to the jaw, the sinuses, or the bloodstream. That is why an abscessed tooth is treated as a serious dental emergency rather than something to monitor at home. The longer the infection continues, the more tissue becomes involved and the harder it becomes to save the tooth.

Treatment usually starts with draining the infection to relieve pressure and pain, with antibiotics added when they are necessary. The tooth itself is then treated, most often with root canal treatment to clean out the infected inner tissue, or with extraction when the tooth cannot be saved. The aim is to stop the infection quickly while protecting overall health.

Antibiotics are used when necessary, but they are part of treatment rather than the whole of it. They can control the spread of bacteria while the source of the infection is still inside the tooth or gum, so the tooth still needs draining, root canal treatment, or extraction. Without that step the infection commonly returns.
